Photo with Borrowers

We wanted to get a group photo taken with the actual SKS borrowers. The borrowers, however, would only consent to being photographed with the women in our group.

The Village Mosque

Here, you can see the village mosque from our visit to the village supported by SKS microfinance.

This particular village was largely Muslim.

SKS Finance

SKS Finance is changing the landscape of life in rural villages in India by providing access to credit to women villagers. SKS only lends to women, whose repayment risk is less than that for men. In turn these women organize themselves into groups of five who work together to run their business. Each village has six groups of five women who work together. Although it is difficult to understand the tangible benefits of the 20 month loan program, each of us felt a sense of hope and future for the children we met.

These books record ever transaction between SKS and the women of the village including the weekly loan payments which are made by functional group.

Walking through the village and the town was the best experience in this trip because we were able to interact with children of all ages.

TATA

At Bombay House in Tata Group's world headquarters, Spencer Hanes appears before the Tata family crest.

Also, a bust of the forefather of Tata Group and Tata Sons, JN Tata, is featured here. Tata is a diversified technology, telecom, chemicals, energy, consumer products and automobile company whose revenues are approximately 3% of India's GDP.

Next to his bust is a bust of his son, JRD Tata who took over the business and ran it for more than 40 years. The Tata's are known for their willingness to put people ahead of profit and their long-time commitment to helping India develop its resources. Their philanthropic commitments have helped countless millions of people in India through investments in education as well as other key industries.

We received a copy of The Creation of Wealth from our host at Tata Group. The book chronicles the rise of the Tata Group (including Tata Sons) and their strategic efforts to focus their efforts in a number of key industries since liberalization began in 1991.

Infosys Welcomes Wake Forest University

We made the welcome board at Infosys.

Our tour of the Infosys campus revealed a completely self-contained city for technology companies that have brought great opportunities to India.

Infosys' buildings proudly feature the most modern architecture that rivals any in the world. Others will have to post their pictures of the cafeteria that is modeled after the Opera House in Sydney, Australia.

This picture doesn't do this courtyard justice, but its beauty impressed each of us. In a flat world, India has the market cornered on technological advancement.

Microfinance making a difference

SKS Finance is a for profit micro-lending company in India that is making a difference in the lives of tens of thousands of people by extending credit to women in villages throughout India. With more than 70% of India's population living in rural villages, SKS Finance has identified a great need for people to build a business-credit. In the midst of the credit crunch in the US, we visited this village where 30 women have begun businesses that have improved their livelihood. Loans as small as $200 per month have provided the capital for these women to build equity in their own small business--allowing them to grow their business and improve their family's future. Six groups of five women join together to receive an SKS loan and meet weekly to make interest payments that reach upwards of 28%. SKS's for-profit model ensures that these women take their loans seriously and they cooperate within the group to cover the weekly payments. In the several years since SKS began this lending effort, they report a 99% repayment rate.
